People wait in line for hours to get a chance to taste the trademarked New York Cronut from the Dominique Ansel Bakery. This cream-filled croissant-doughnut’s demand wipes out the bakery’s supply daily and, not surprisingly, some duplications of the Cronut have popped up since its creation. However, because Dominique Ansel had the forethought to file for the Cronut trademark, none of those providing similar items will be  legally able to call them Cronuts. Ansel filed his application May 19, 2013, since then at least two others have filed application for including CRONUT.  Ansel’s application will have priority over those later filed applications and bar their registrations.
While some have become frustrated with the Dominique Ansel Bakery in their legal attempts to defend the trademarked title “Cronut,” others have just created new names to apply to recipes that are not exact, but of a similar nature. The fried croissant-doughnut combo is a New York hit and due to its intense demand we will most likely continue to see it in the future.
